Training for Transition (T4T) provides an important--and unique--opportunity to learn about the issues families face when students in special education begin the process of leaving school for adult life. Because the Developmental Disabilities Resource Center has agreed to become the funding partner for the project, this years participants must reside in Jefferson, Clear Creek, Gilpin or Summit Counties.
Participants learn that while a "free and appropriate public education" is mandated by federal and state law for children with special needs, there is no such "guarantee" for services in the adult system. In fact, many people describe the adult system as a "maze"--confusing and complex, where no one really knows what the other is doing.
Now in its 7th year, sessions this for the '07-'08 year are still in the planning stages.
Topics included: 1) The Adult System "Oxymoron", 2) the Transition IEP or "Full Life Ahead", 3) Employment Options in the Community, 4) Understanding Social Security, 5) Building Resources in the Community and 6) Developing a Positive Plan for the Future around Self-Determination.
Self advocates learn about their developing community options and the principles of a building a self-determined life.
A "parents" panel and a "self advocates" panel give parents and students the chance to hear from those who had already transitioned from school to adult life.
